Islamabad. At least 18 dangerous criminals escaped from a jail in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) after attacking a security guard, officials said on Monday. They said six of the escaped prisoners were sentenced to death. The incident took place in the Rawalakot jail on Friday when a prisoner snatched the jail keys from a security guard at gunpoint. A police official said that out of the 18 prisoners who escaped, six were sentenced to death while the other three were serving life imprisonment.

Another prisoner who was trying to escape was shot dead, the official said. He (the prisoner) was serving a five-year sentence, he said. Police have launched a massive search operation in the area. Meanwhile, officials have started an investigation into the incident and the jail chief and some other officials have been dismissed. Police said some officials have been detained for questioning.

According to Sama TV, seven officials, including the deputy superintendent of the Rawalkot jail, have been taken into custody and an investigation into the security breach has been launched. According to the news, all jails in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir have been put on high alert in view of the security lapse. The government has requested the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the reasons behind the escape of prisoners.
