At least 35 Pakistani pilgrims were killed and 18 injured when a bus overturned at a checkpoint in Iran’s Yazd, reports Dawn News TV. The accident occurred in the central Iranian province of Yazd on Tuesday night, local emergency official Mohammad Ali Malekzadeh said, according to state news agency IRNA. The pilgrims were travelling to Iraq to celebrate Arbaeen, which marks the 40th day since the death of a 7th-century Shia saint.

“Unfortunately, 11 women and 17 men lost their lives in this accident. Seven of the injured are in critical condition and six injured people have now left the hospital,” the director general of crisis management in Yazd province told state TV.

The official said Pakistan’s consular services in Iran have been invited to Yazd province to gather information about the accident. Millions of Shia Muslims are currently attending the Arbaeen pilgrimage in Iraq’s Karbala province. The event marks the 40th day of mourning since the martyrdom of Imam Hussein bin Ali, a central figure in Shia Islam and a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
