The Indian team is ready to show its prowess in table tennis. Table tennis is also played with a racket and a ball. But the only difference is that lawn tennis is played on a ground while table tennis is played on a table as per its name. This game is played between two players or doubles teams.

Table tennis has been invented at different times and places. It is said that this game was played in England in the mid-19th century. The official name of this game was Ping Pong. The credit for creating this game goes to the ruler of the Victorian era of Northern England. Table tennis was first designed for the entertainment of children around 1880.

Talking about the rules of the game, all the rules are made by the International Table Tennis Federation. All the players of the world are bound to follow them. At the beginning of the game, any one player can serve from the corner of the table. But the ball should touch the ball and fall in the opponent’s area. The serve has to be done from a maximum height of 6 inches. There are 11 points in each game but whenever the score is equal at 10-10, the game is played for one ball each after each serve and the player who wins the first two points is declared the winner. Each player is given two serves and a change is made in every third serve.

The first world championship of this sport was held in London in 1926. It took a long time for this sport to make its mark in the Olympic Games and it was given a place in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. After which the popularity of this sport has been increasing continuously which continues even today. The sport includes singles, doubles and mixed events. India is also hoping for a medal in this sport. Manika Batra, who missed a medal in the last Olympics, and Sharat Kamal, the Indian flag bearer in this Olympics, are fully prepared to get a medal for the country.
