South Korea’s presidential office said in a statement that President Yoon Sook Yeol chaired an emergency meeting to discuss the issue of North Korea sending troops to aid Russia against Ukraine. A statement in this regard said that officials attending the meeting said that sending troops by North Korea is a serious security threat to South Korea and the international community.
South Korea has claimed that North Korea has sent 12,000 troops, including special operations forces, to support Russia’s war against Ukraine. Yonhap news agency quoted the National Intelligence Service as saying that the North had already left the country, and were formed into four brigades. Other South Korean media outlets also published similar reports. If confirmed, it would be North Korea’s first major involvement in a foreign war. North Korea has 1.2 million troops, one of the largest armies in the world, but lacks real combat experience.

Ukrainian media said earlier this month that six North Koreans were among those killed in Ukraine’s missile strike on October 3 in the partially captured eastern Donetsk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters at NATO headquarters on Thursday that his government has intelligence that 10,000 North Korean troops are being drafted to help Russian forces fighting against his country. He warned that the conflict could turn into a world war if a third country joins the war.
