Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday issued a public apology after the recent collapse of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which was erected last year. Given the historical and cultural significance of the Maratha warrior king, the incident has sparked widespread concern and criticism across the state. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday criticised the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government over the collapse of Shivaji Maharaj’s statue. Thackeray said the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will hold a protest march against the collapse in Mumbai on September 1. The former Maharashtra chief minister hit out at Maharashtra minister Deepak Kesarkar for saying that something good could come out of the collapse of Shivaji Maharaj’s statue. He also said that claiming that the statue of Shivaji Maharaj at Malvan fort fell due to wind is the height of shamelessness.
The 35-foot statue of the 17th century Maratha Empire founder, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg on December 4 last year, collapsed on Monday afternoon. Initial reports suggested that the statue collapsed due to heavy rains and strong winds in Sindhudurg district over the past few days, following which opposition parties attacked the Maharashtra government for the poor quality of work and maintenance of the statue.
