Birth and education
Abhinav Bindra was born on 28 September 1982 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. He studied at Doon School for two years. He became interested in shooting during his school days. Seeing Abhinav’s passion for shooting, his parents built a shooting range at home, so that he could practice easily. Abhinav started trying his hand in shooting since childhood. Which later proved beneficial for his career.
Won bronze medal in World Cup
In 1998, at the age of just 15, Abhinav Bindra participated in the Commonwealth Games. During that time he was the youngest participant. Even though Abhinav was young, he was passionate. His biggest success came when he won the bronze medal at the 2001 Munich World Cup with a new junior world record score of 597/600. That year Abhinav Bindra was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna.
Youngest Indian player
When Abhinav Bindra reached the Olympic Games in 2002, he was the youngest Indian player. At that time his age was only 17 years. Then Abhinav secured 11th position in the qualification round. Abhinav Bindra could not reach the finals, as he dropped out of the top 10. Abhinav’s coach was Dr. Amit Bhattacharya, he taught Abhinav Bindra the tricks of shooting for many years from childhood till he grew up.
Won gold medal in Olympics
Abhinav Bindra has won gold medals in the Commonwealth Games in the years 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014. In the year 2004, he made a record in the Athens Olympics. But missed out on winning the medal. Then in the year 2008, at the age of just 26, Abhinav won the gold medal for the country in 10 meter air rifle shooting. During that time, Abhinav was the only player in the country who won an individual gold medal.
