Abhishek Banerjee will have to face tough challenges to win

Diamond Harbor (West Bengal). All eyes are on the Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal. Here, Trinamool Congress’s most prominent leader and current MP Abhishek Banerjee is contesting for the third consecutive time, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has placed its bet on Abhijit Das Bobby. While the Trinamool Congress calls this seat a model constituency, the opposition has termed it a laboratory of violence. If Banerjee gets more votes than 2019 in the current Lok Sabha elections, it will increase her credibility and strengthen her influence in Trinamool at a time when influential leaders like Tapas Roy and Arjun Singh and veteran leaders like Shubhendu Adhikari joined the BJP three years ago due to sharp differences within the party.

Diamond Harbor, located between Kolkata and South 24 Parganas district, is considered a strategic stronghold for the Trinamool Congress. Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claimed in a rally that this time he will get more votes than his last two terms. Political analyst Vishwanath Chakraborty said, Abhishek Banerjee’s continued success in Diamond Harbor will not only strengthen Trinamool’s dominance in the area but will also increase his stature within the party. The huge margin of victory will reflect his leadership and developmental approach. Party insiders say that if Abhishek’s stature has increased in Trinamool, then the reason for it is his political strategy making and getting the support of the people.

He agrees that making him the party’s general secretary in 2021 and his unquestionably growing influence in decision-making angered a section of senior leaders. The Trinamool under Banerjee is trying to promote Diamond Harbor as a model constituency. They believe that it is a parliamentary constituency where there has been significant development in infrastructure, health care and education. While the Trinamool claims development in the Diamond Harbor area, the opposition has termed it a laboratory of violence. In such a situation, a section of voters who voted in favor of Banerjee may be affected. Trinamool MLA from Maheshtala Dulal Das told PTI, “There has been development in Diamond Harbor under the leadership of Abhishek Banerjee. From better roads and health facilities to advanced educational opportunities, our work speaks for itself. Our leader has vowed to make it a model constituency.”

The Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat will witness a triangular contest in the current Lok Sabha elections, where Banerjee is pitted against Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Pratikur Rahman and BJP’s Abhijit Das. Both opposition parties raise the issue of violence and undemocratic practices in the region. They have accused the Trinamool of creating an atmosphere of fear, where political disagreement leads to violence and large-scale electoral malpractices. BJP’s Abhijit Das said, Trinamool is promoting a model of undemocratic practices. The way voters are being intimidated is unacceptable in a democracy. This is not a model of development but a laboratory of violence. In the last election, the BJP got 34 per cent of the total votes. Locals allege that an atmosphere of fear has been created by the ruling party despite availing welfare schemes.
