The Kerala Health Department said that a 38-year-old man undergoing treatment in the state’s northern Malappuram district has been confirmed to be infected with monkeypox (ampox). Giving information through a Facebook post, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that the man, who recently came to the state from the United Arab Emirates, was already admitted to a hospital with symptoms of monkeypox.
George requested people coming from abroad to report any symptoms to him and seek treatment as soon as possible. He said the person had isolated himself from his family as a precautionary measure after showing symptoms and is currently admitted to Manjeri Medical College. The person’s samples were sent for testing and the report on Wednesday confirmed that he was infected.
Last month, WHO declared ampox a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) for the second time, given its prevalence and spread in many parts of Africa. Ampox infection is usually limited to the victim. It lasts for two to four weeks and patients usually recover with medical care. It spreads through prolonged and close contact with an infected patient.
