Maryam Nawaz said amid reports of “friendly countries” being reluctant to invest in cash-strapped Pakistan that ambassadors of various countries are expressing serious concern over the “political chaos” in the country. She said that today the ambassador of a country met Nawaz Sharif and me and asked about the “political chaos”.

Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said on Wednesday that ambassadors of various countries were expressing serious concern over the “political chaos” in the country amid reports that “friendly countries” were hesitant to invest in cash-strapped Pakistan. “Today the ambassador of a country met (former prime minister and PML-N president) Nawaz Sharif and me and asked about the “political chaos” in Pakistan,” Maryam said while addressing a function in Punjab’s Faisalabad city.

Nawaz Sharif told her that political turmoil is nothing new in Pakistan and he has grown up seeing it.” Chinese ambassador Jiang Zedong met Nawaz and Maryam in Lahore on Wednesday. A day earlier, US ambassador to Pakistan Donald Bloom met the two leaders and discussed the current political situation in the country. Maryam said political turmoil is common in Pakistan and she too does not know how long she will remain in office.

She said, “Political chaos is continuing in the country and I also do not know for how long I will remain in the post (of chief minister).” For the past two years, political instability has been increasing in Pakistan and the country’s most popular party – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is at loggerheads with the military establishment. PTI supremo and former prime minister Imran Khan has been in jail for more than a year in several cases and the military establishment is accused of installing the government of Shahbaz Sharif after massive rigging in this year’s general elections, in which the PTI claimed it had won a two-thirds majority.
