Washington/Male. A senior US State Department official has said that the US reiterates its commitment to partner with the Maldives to ensure a free, open, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. This statement from the US has come at a time when Maldives seems to be moving closer to China. The US gave this message when Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Maldives Foreign Minister Musa Jamir in Washington on Tuesday. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Secretary of State Blinken reiterated America’s commitment to partner with the Maldives to promote an independent, free, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

Maldives leader Mohammed Muizzu is known for his pro-China stance and assumed office as president in November last year. Since coming to power, he has strengthened Maldives’ relations with China and signed several bilateral agreements, including a defense cooperation agreement. Blinken’s reference to the Indo-Pacific region is also important because China strongly opposes the involvement of the US and other countries in the region. China has maritime territorial disputes with countries like the Philippines and Vietnam in the region.
