Amethi-Raebareli: Congress put all its strength in saving the stronghold of Gandhi family, entrusted big responsibility to these two stalwarts

Rahul Gandhi and Kishori Lal Sharma have filed their nominations. Voting will be held in Rae Bareli and Amethi on May 20 in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections.

Congress has appointed Bhupesh Baghel as AICC senior observer of Rae Bareli and Ashok Gehlot of Amethi. Rahul Gandhi is contesting the Lok Sabha elections 2024 from Rae Bareli seat of Uttar Pradesh. The stronghold of the Nehru-Gandhi family which was vacated by his mother Sonia Gandhi. Gandhi family loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma has been fielded from Amethi, the seat where Rahul Gandhi lost to Union minister Smriti Irani in 2019. The Congress party had released the names of candidates for the two seats on May 3, the last date for filing nominations.

Rahul Gandhi and Kishori Lal Sharma have filed their nominations. Voting will be held in Rae Bareli and Amethi on May 20 in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections. Rahul has already contested the Lok Sabha elections from Wayanad seat in Kerala, which he won in 2019. The second phase of voting was held in Wayanad on 26 April. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on May 2 declared UP minister Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate from Rae Bareli. Singh had lost to Sonia Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Kishori Lal Sharma, a long-time Congress loyalist, is from Ludhiana, Punjab. Sharma’s association with the Congress party dates back to 1983 when he started working with Rajiv Gandhi after leaving Punjab. Later, he worked with Sonia Gandhi as in-charge of Amethi constituency, from where he had contested in 1999. Later Sharma also served as in-charge of Rae Bareli seat. The Congress had been winning Amethi and Rae Bareli seats from 1999 till the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi to Union Minister Smriti Irani. Rahul had been winning from Amethi since 2004.
