Narasaraopeta. Andhra Pradesh police on Wednesday arrested Yuvajana Sramika Raithu Congress Party (YSRCP) leader P Ramakrishna Reddy. He was arrested after the High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea in the case of alleged attack on a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) polling agent. The polling agent had questioned Reddy about breaking an EVM. Ramakrishna Reddy, a former MLA from Macherla, barged into polling booth number 202 of the constituency on the polling day on May 13 and smashed the EVM on the floor.

During this time, he also allegedly had an altercation with the leaders of the opposition parties at the polling booth. When a TDP worker questioned Reddy, he allegedly threatened the worker and later instigated his supporters against the opposition party worker. Reddy’s supporters allegedly attacked the agent with sticks, rods and knives. This incident of breaking the EVM was captured in web cameras installed by the Election Commission, after which Reddy was identified with footage and documentary evidence.

Reddy was absconding for a few days after the incident came to light. The Andhra Pradesh High Court had granted Reddy interim protection from arrest for a few days considering various reasons including his status as a candidate in the assembly elections. Ramakrishna Reddy lost the election from Macherla constituency to TDP’s J Brahmananda Reddy. The High Court on Wednesday rejected his anticipatory bail in the case of attack on a TDP worker.
