Protests have been going on across the country for more than a week over the rape and murder of a female resident doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident of the brutal act with the female resident doctor, identified as Moumita Debnath, is also being called ‘Nirbhaya 2’. Amidst all this, Asha Devi, mother of ‘Nirbhaya’, the victim of the Delhi rape case, has now reacted to the Kolkata case. She has clearly said that she does not think anything has been done for the safety of women and to bring the criminals against women to justice.
Asha Devi said, ‘Whatever happened to that daughter, if there are more than one person, then all the accused should be caught immediately. They should be punished immediately. It is not yet known whether the girl was beaten up by one person or gang-raped. Such a heinous crime happened with a doctor when she was on duty in the hospital. If doctors are not safe inside the hospital then what can we think about common women and girls.’
Nirbhaya’s mother further said, ‘The most unfortunate thing is the situation that has arisen there. Instead of working on the case and working on the shortcomings of women’s safety and law, the governments are accusing each other and protesting. Health ministry, police, everything comes under the CM (West Bengal), it is not understood against whom she is protesting and from whom she is asking for death penalty. The law is in her hands, the government can at least send the case to the lower court properly. Whenever such an incident happens, Nirbhaya’s name comes up but what did we learn from the Nirbhaya incident, what change has come in the system? We are still in 2012.’

Asha Devi said, ‘I don’t think anything has been done for the safety of women and to bring the criminals against women to justice, laws were definitely made but no work was done. Nirbhaya’s culprits were hanged in 2020 but so many incidents happened before and after that. Who got justice? Incidents are happening every day. If you do not punish the culprits and do not put them in jail and do not give them food and do not take care of their needs, how will women be safe? Till the time the culprits are not punished, till the fast track court does not work and till the laws made are not worked upon, the mentality of the society will not change and women will not be safe.’
