Assam has zero tolerance policy in dealing with crimes against women: Himanta

Silchar (Assam): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his government has a zero-tolerance policy in dealing with crimes against women and “strict action” is taken against the accused in such cases. Sarma also said the state’s police force is setting an example by taking prompt action in cases of crimes against women. “When any incident (like rape) takes place in Assam, the police take prompt action. There is no compromise. When it comes to crimes against women, our policy is zero-tolerance,” Sarma told reporters.
Referring to the incident of gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Dhing, Sharma said, the incident took place two days ago. Police arrested the accused, but he tried to escape by jumping into the water and died in the process. In another case, an accused of molesting a girl in Tezpur was injured in police firing while trying to escape from custody.
Regarding this, the Chief Minister said, she tried to run away and was shot. He said, “Cases increased after the Lok Sabha elections. But now the cases have reduced and will reduce further.” Sharma said, we have taken action and will continue to do so. There may be prior information in extremist or terrorist attacks. But in cases like rape, no intelligence is available. When such incidents happen, we have to take strict action so that others fear that if they try to do something like this, they will also have to face the law.
