The readout released by the United States after a phone call between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not mention the Bangladesh crisis, fuelling speculations of uneasiness in relations between the White House and Dhaka. The Ministry of External Affairs press release mentioned that PM Modi and Biden expressed their shared concern over the situation in Bangladesh. The White House remained silent on the issue and focused only on the Ukraine-Russia war. In a post on the micro-blogging site, PM Modi said that during the call with Biden they had a detailed exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine. “I reiterated India’s full support for an early return to peace and stability,” the Prime Minister said.

In a post on X, Biden said that I spoke to Prime Minister Modi on the phone to discuss his recent visit to Poland and Ukraine and appreciated his message of peace and humanitarian support for Ukraine. He said, we also reaffirmed our commitment to work together to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. This was the first conversation between the two leaders after Modi’s visit to Russia, Poland and Ukraine and the recent developments in Bangladesh. The White House said that the two leaders also discussed Modi’s recent visit to Poland and Ukraine as well as the proposed United Nations General Assembly meetings in September.
