The Badminton Association of India (BAI) announced a total reward of Rs 50 lakh for the country’s para badminton players who won medals at the Paris Paralympics last month. Indian para badminton players won a total of five medals including one gold, two silver and two bronze at the Paris Games.
Nitesh Kumar, who won gold in the men’s singles SL3 category, will receive a prize of Rs 15 lakh. Silver medalists Suhas Yathiraj (men’s singles SL4) and Thulasimati Murugesan (women’s singles SU5) will be given Rs 10 lakh each. Bronze medalists Manisha Ramdas (women’s singles SU5) and Nitya Sri Sivan (women’s singles SH6 category) will each receive Rs 7 lakh 50 thousand.
Tulsimati, Manisha and Nitya created history by becoming the first Indian women badminton players to win medals at the Paralympics. BAI Secretary General Sanjay Mishra said, “Indian Para badminton players have been consistently performing well on the world stage and the cash award is BAI’s way of recognising their efforts in helping the country win medals at the Paralympics.”
He said, “BAI is committed to develop and promote Para Badminton across the country and help these players achieve more success and many more initiatives are being taken to develop Para Badminton.”
Given the busy tournament schedule of the players, BAI will also organise a virtual interaction session with these players to felicitate them and understand their requirements for continued development.
