During the IPL, former foreign players like Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer had claimed that the BCCI tried to contact them for the post of coach, but they refused it. However, later BCCI secretary Jay Shah clarified the issue and said that the board is looking for an Indian coach for Team India.

Gautam Gambhir worked as a mentor in the last three seasons of IPL. He first mentored Lucknow Super Giants and then returned to KKR and helped the team win its third title as a mentor.

According to many media reports, Gautam Gambhir is a big contender to become the head coach of the Indian team. An IPL franchise owner very close to the top officials of the BCCI told that Gambhir’s deal has been finalized. The announcement has not been made yet because talks are going on between the two parties regarding some things. Gambhir has been a part of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup 2007 and the World Cup 2011. Under his captaincy, KKR won the title in 2012 and 2014.
