YEARS

Why will Bengal flood due to the irresponsible activities of the Central Government? I am sorry but this is not Bengal’s water. This is Panchet water of Jharkhand which is coming from DVC, an organization of the Central Government.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that I don’t know why the central government is not raising this issue with DVC (Damodar Valley Corporation). They have released all the water in Bengal. Why will Bengal flood due to the irresponsible activities of the central government? I am sorry but this is not Bengal’s water. This is Panchet water of Jharkhand which is coming from DVC, a central government organization.

Earlier, Mamata had said that since 2009, this amount of water has never been released. I had requested them not to release water in large quantities, despite this, 3.5 lakh cusecs of water was released. We are angry with this attitude of DVC. This man-made flood situation was created. An application for a master plan was given to the central government regarding Ghatal, but they did nothing. The state government is arranging for DPR. This is a plan worth Rs 1500 crore.

Flood-like situation has arisen in Howrah, Hooghly, Birbhum, West Midnapore, East Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia, West Burdwan and East Burdwan districts of West Bengal after water was released from dams following heavy rains in West Bengal and Jharkhand. Alapan Bandyopadhyay, advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, said there has been heavy rain and the DVC is releasing water from Panchet dam on Damodar river and Maithon dam on Barakar river. A deep depression formed over the Ganges coast in West Bengal caused heavy rains in south Bengal over the weekend and on Monday. The weather system moved towards Jharkhand on Monday.
