Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will request the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate the deaths of candidates during a recruitment drive in Jharkhand. Sarma claimed that 15 candidates died during the physical efficiency test for the post of excise constable due to ‘extreme heat’ in Jharkhand.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will request the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate the death of candidates during the recruitment drive in Jharkhand. Sharma claimed that 15 candidates died during the physical efficiency test for the post of excise constable in Jharkhand due to ‘extreme heat’. Sharma said that the state government should immediately postpone the physical efficiency test till September 15.

According to Jharkhand Police, 12 candidates have been reported dead so far, while state Health Minister Banna Gupta put the death toll at four. Sharma said, “The BJP will urge the NHRC to investigate the deaths of the candidates. The Hemant Soren government should provide Rs 50 lakh and a job to the family of each candidate who lost their lives. If they fail to do so, the BJP will provide jobs to their family members after coming to power (in the state).”

Assembly elections are due in Jharkhand this year. He also announced that the BJP will give Rs 1 lakh each to the family members of the victims. The physical efficiency test for excise constable recruitment in Jharkhand began on August 22 at seven centers in six districts and will continue till September 9.
