London. Kolkata-born historian-writer Shrabani Basu has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of London for her contribution to the field of literature and the study of common British-Indian history. Basu, author of best-selling biographical books ‘Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan’ and ‘Victoria and Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant’, received her honorary degree of ‘Doctor of Literature’ at a convocation ceremony on Tuesday. Accepted.

‘Victoria and Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant’ was also made into a film which was nominated for an Oscar and starred Dame Judi Dench. Princess Royal–Princess Anne, sister of Britain’s King Charles III, presented this degree to Basu in her capacity as Chancellor of the University. Referring to this ‘humbling and proud moment’, Basu said in his address, “In 2009, it was the University of London that gave us permission to build a memorial to World War II heroine Noor Inayat Khan at Gordon Square.”

“The university recognized the importance of the memory of Noor Inayat Khan, about whom very little was known at that time,” he said. It was his memorial day in 2012 when the Princess Royal unveiled his bust. Today people from all over the world come to this memorial and the story of Noor is well known to the people.” In her address, Dr. Basu, who graduated in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, said that she worked as a journalist in the 1980s. She mentioned her journey from India to Britain when she came face to face with many hidden wonders and these things found a place in her books. Now she lives in London.
