Candidates Chess champion D Gukesh gets warm welcome at Chennai airport

India’s young Grandmaster D Gukesh, who created history by winning the Candidates Chess Tournament in Toronto, has returned home. After which he was given a grand welcome at Chennai Airport. Hundreds of students of Gukesh’s school, Velammal Vidyalaya, were lining up an hour in advance and waiting for him at the airport. Apart from this, many fans were also present. 17-year-old Gukesh came out at 3 o’clock in the night and was surrounded by the crowd. They were garlanded with flowers. During this time the police had to make a lot of efforts to get them out safely.
While talking to the media at the airport, Gukesh said that I feel very good to come home. This is a special achievement. I was playing well from the beginning and was confident of victory. Luck also favored me. He further said, “It feels good to see so many people watching chess. I thank the Tamil Nadu government. I will also thank my appa, amma, coach, friends, family, sponsors and school.” Mother Padma had come to receive him with her family. Gukesh’s father, ENT surgeon Rajnikanth, had left his practice and accompanied him to Toronto for his preparations.

Gukesh created history by winning the Candidates Chess Tournament and becoming the youngest challenger for the World Championship title. He broke Garry Kasparov’s 40 year old record. Gukesh played a draw with Hikaru Nakamura of America in the 14th and last round. He will challenge current world champion Ding Liren of China at the end of the year.
