CBI begins questioning former principal of RG Kar Hospital and others in connection with financial irregularities

Kolkata: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths on Monday began questioning former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) Sandip Ghosh and former medical superintendent and deputy principal Sanjay Vasisht in connection with their probe into alleged financial irregularities at the institute, a CBI official said.
CBI officials had searched Ghosh’s Beliaghata residence on Sunday. He reached the agency’s office in Salt Lake on Monday morning with files and documents. According to the official, Vashisht’s house was also raided by CBI officials. Vashisht appeared before the central agency officials at the Nizam Palace. The official said that a professor of the Forensic Medicine Department has also been called for questioning at the same office.

“We have many questions for them after yesterday’s search operation,” the official told PTI. The CBI on Sunday carried out simultaneous searches at the premises of Ghosh, Vasisht and 13 others in and around Kolkata as part of its probe into alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH). The CBI’s anti-corruption unit also raided the offices and residences of some people who supplied material for patient care.
According to the complaint filed by former deputy superintendent of RGKMCH Akhtar Ali, Ghosh, during his tenure as principal of the hospital, along with his associates, had issued tenders for construction of food stalls, cafe, canteen and urinal without the permission of the health department and the college council.

According to the official, initial investigation revealed that three businessmen had received illegal contracts. On August 9, the body of a female doctor was found in Kolkata’s government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which had marks of serious injuries. Kolkata Police arrested Roy the next day in connection with this incident. There are widespread protests across the country against this incident. On the instructions of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI registered cases of murder and alleged financial irregularities.
