Washington has repeatedly warned Beijing over its support for Russia’s defence industrial base and has already issued hundreds of sanctions aimed at curbing Moscow’s ability to exploit certain technologies for military purposes.

China on Tuesday called US sanctions on its entities over the Ukraine war illegal and unilateral and not based on facts, ahead of White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan’s arrival in Beijing for a high-level meeting. Last week, the United States imposed sanctions on more than 400 entities and individuals, including Chinese companies, for supporting Russia’s war effort in Ukraine. US officials say they help Moscow evade Western sanctions and build up its military.

Washington has repeatedly warned Beijing over its support for Russia’s defense industrial base and has already issued hundreds of sanctions aimed at curbing Moscow’s ability to exploit certain technologies for military purposes. China’s special envoy for Eurasian affairs, Li Hui, who has carried out four rounds of shuttle diplomacy, opposed the sanctions at a briefing for diplomats in Beijing after the latest round of meetings with officials from Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa.

After arriving at Beijing airport, Sullivan was received by Yang Tao, head of North America and Pacific affairs in the Chinese Foreign Ministry. US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns was also present on this occasion. Sullivan has been Biden’s most trusted official for unannounced talks with the top foreign official of the Communist Party of China to reduce the tension in relations between America and Beijing.
