Beijing. Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the 24th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana this week, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday. It said he will also pay a state visit to Tajikistan. The ministry said President Jinping will attend the 24th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State in Astana from July 2 to 6. Officials say the summit is expected to discuss the situation in Afghanistan, the Russia-Ukraine war and promoting overall security cooperation among SCO member countries.

The SCO comprises India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Earlier, India’s Foreign Ministry said the country would be represented by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Officials say a meeting between Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is likely to take place during the summit. If this happens, it will be the first high-level meeting between Indian and Chinese officials after the formation of the third government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the recent general elections in India.
