The Supreme Court on August 20 directed the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to provide security at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the rape and murder of a 31-year-old resident doctor led to nationwide outrage and protests. The court, which took suo motu cognizance of the case, issued a slew of directions seeking a status report on the investigation during a hearing by a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. The court also urged doctors to return to work.
Doctors’ protest continues
The protesting doctors want the CBI to catch the culprits and the court to give them maximum punishment. They also want an assurance from the government that ‘no such incident will happen in future.’ The alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor in a seminar hall of a government hospital has triggered protests across the country. Police resorted to mild lathicharge and arrested over 20 ABVP activists after clashes broke out during a march to the West Bengal Health Department headquarters.
West Bengal Governor Dr CV Anand Bose has opened a mobile control room for the ongoing agitation in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 2nd year PGT female resident doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, the numbers being 03322001641 and 9289010682. If anyone wants to convey anything to HG, he/she can call on these numbers. The first call from the mobile control room was made by the Governor to the father of the deceased doctor. The Governor has assured all possible help and consoled the bereaved family.
