New Delhi. Public sector Coal India Ltd (CIL) said that it is actively pursuing the acquisition of critical minerals including lithium in the domestic market and abroad. The company has said that it will continue to participate in the auction of such blocks. Critical minerals, including lithium, play an important role in the production of clean energy technologies ranging from wind turbines to electric cars. They are especially in demand for the production of batteries for electric cars.

“With an aim to reduce dependence on import of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, the company is actively pursuing acquisition of these mineral assets in India and abroad,” Coal India Ltd Chairman P M Prasad said during the company’s 50th Annual General Meeting. He said CIL will continue to participate in e-auction of critical mineral blocks offered by the Ministry of Mines. He said CIL has successfully opened its account in domestic critical mineral asset and has emerged as preferred bidder for Khattali Choti Graphite Block in Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh.

This will be the company’s first non-coal mineral mining venture. He said, “This achievement was achieved under the second phase auction held by the Ministry of Mines on July 9.” Prasad said that CIL’s goal is to ensure that there is no shortage of coal in the country and make it self-sufficient in terms of dry fuel. Coal India’s share in the country’s total coal production is 80 percent. He said that the company is committed to increasing the production and supply of quality coal to provide electricity to the citizens of the country at a reasonable price.
