For the Haryana assembly elections, the Congress has once again expressed confidence in former minister and current MLA Geeta Bhukkal from Jhajjar seat and made her its candidate. Geeta Bhukkal was born on 16 August 1968. She joined the cabinet of the previous Haryana government and worked as the Minister of Education, Health, Women and Child Development, Social Justice and Empowerment, Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes, Industrial Training and Printing and Stationery.
Bhukkal was born to Mr. Rattan Singh Punia in Matanhail village of Jhajjar district, Haryana. After completing her B.A. from Punjab University, Chandigarh, she did a Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations from D.A.V. Management College, Chandigarh. Bhukkal also completed her Bachelor of Laws degree from Delhi University and Bachelor of Education degree from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak and thereafter she did her M.A. in Political Science. Bhukkal was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly from Kalayat Assembly Constituency for the first time in 2005. She won this seat for Indian National Congress for the first time in 37 years.
After delimitation before the 2009 assembly elections, she contested from Jhajjar assembly constituency in 2009 and won the election by a margin of over 28,000 votes. She was made the cabinet minister for Education and Languages, Social Justice and Empowerment, Welfare of SC/Backward Classes, Women and Child Development, Industrial Training, Archaeology and Museums, Archives, Health and Medical Education, and Printing and Stationery. She won the 2014 assembly election from Jhajjar assembly constituency by a margin of over 26,000 votes and became the first MLA to win consecutive terms from Jhajjar and also became the first education minister to win the election, creating a record of sorts.
MLA Bhukkal won the 2019 assembly elections from Jhajjar assembly constituency by a margin of over 15,000 votes and became the first MLA from Jhajjar to win the seat three times in a row and made a hattrick of her victory in Jhajjar assembly constituency and also made her winning streak in state assembly elections by winning for the fourth time in a row since 2005.
