Pune: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said the proposed 14-lane road near the Atal Setu on the sea would reduce the existing traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway by 50 per cent. He said the proposed road would connect Pune through a ring road. The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways was speaking about road plans for Mumbai-Bengaluru at an alumni function organised by COEP Technological University on the occasion of Engineer’s Day.
He said, “There is a lot of traffic pressure on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. If a 14-lane road is built near Atal Setu, then this road will reduce the traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway by 50 percent. This road will further connect to Pune and then Bengaluru through the ring road.” Atal Setu is the longest bridge built on the sea in the country and it connects Mumbai’s Shivadi to Navi Mumbai. Addressing the program, Gadkari said that India ranks third in the world in the automobile sector and in the next 25 years all vehicles will run on electricity and not fossil fuel.
The Union minister said, “Our technology should be economical. We can use waste to build roads. About 80 lakh tonnes of waste has been used to build new roads. There is a lot of scope for researchers in this field.” Emphasising the Centre’s concept of self-reliance, he said India needs smart villages and not smart cities. Gadkari said, “The living standards of farmers should improve. Only then can we call them self-reliant.”
