Surat. The death toll in the collapse of a six-storey building in Gujarat’s Surat city has risen to seven after six more bodies were recovered overnight, police said on Sunday. They said a person who collected rent from the tenants of the building has been arrested and a case of culpable homicide has been registered against him and two owners of the building. According to police, the residential building located in Pal area was in a dilapidated condition and collapsed around 2:45 pm on Saturday.

An official had earlier said that the body of one person was recovered on Saturday night. According to police, the rescue team later recovered six more bodies from the debris. Jignesh Chaudhary, inspector of Sachin GIDC police station, said a total of seven bodies were recovered from the debris in the overnight operation.

The statement said that most of the deceased were textile workers from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Inspector Chaudhary said that an FIR has been lodged against the building owner Raj Kakadiya and his mother Ramilaben Kakadiya and Ashwin Vekariya, who collected rent from the residents. He said that Vekariya has been arrested and efforts are on to nab the two other accused.
