India and the US today signed a deal worth Rs 32,000 crore to purchase 31 Predator drones for the three armies and set up maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities for them in the country. Both sides signed the deal in the presence of senior officials. This deal was finalized in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week. India has signed this deal with America a week before the US Presidential Elections.

Why does India need Predator drone?
The drones that India has are for reconnaissance and surveillance missions. Till now we do not have a single drone that can drop weapons or bombs. Which is called Unmanned Aerial Vehicle or Hunter Killer Drone. But we have some programs, out of which work is being done on some such combat air vehicles. We have Israeli made Searcher, Mark-2 and Heron drones being used since 2004 till now. India needs these armed drones to monitor the border with China as well as in the Indian Ocean region.

The MQ-9B drone is the second version of the MQ-9 ‘Reaper’. It was used to fire a modified version of the Hellfire missile in Kabul. Former Iranian army commander Qassem Soleimani, Al Qaeda chief Ayman e Zawahiri and Syrian Al Qaeda chief Salim Abu Ahmed have been victims of Predator drones in the last two decades.
