Delhi: Man arrested for kidnapping children and demanding ransom of Rs 50 lakh

The Delhi Police arrested a man in connection with the kidnapping of a boy and his sister for ransom last month. Police said the accused abducted the children after finding them alone in a car when their parents had got down to buy sweets from a shop in east Delhi.

Pratik Srivastava (34) was arrested from Mandavali on Thursday evening. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Apoorva Gupta said the police traced the accused’s whereabouts after scanning footage from over 300 CCTV cameras.

The officer said that Srivastava was aware that the parents of the children had left the keys in the car and he managed to convince the children that he had been asked to park the car in the parking lot.

Shrivastava had taken away the six-year-old boy and the 11-year-old girl on June 28. Gupta said the children’s father reported the incident to the police, following which 200 police vehicles launched a search operation.

He said the car was traced and police vehicles chased it for about 200 km within the city and Srivastava fled after abandoning the car near Samaypur Badli.

Gupta said the children were rescued and a search was launched for the culprit. He said Srivastava was arrested from Mandavali. The accused lived with his wife and two children.

The officer said that Shrivastav, an air-conditioner mechanic by profession, had demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh. The children’s mother had left her phone in the car and when she called, the accused demanded the ransom from the children’s father.
