Manmohan Singh was born on 26 September 1932 in a village in the Punjab province of undivided India. In the year 1948, he passed the matriculation examination from Punjab University. Then for further studies, he went from Punjab to Cambridge University in Britain. Where he obtained an economics degree in the year 1957. After this, Manmohan Singh also received a degree from Oxford University. In the year 1971, he joined the Ministry of Commerce of the Government of India as an economic advisor. Immediately after this, in the year 1972, Manmohan Singh was appointed Chief Economic Advisor in the Finance Ministry.

Manmohan Singh, who is considered the architect of economic reforms, was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1991 to 2024. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1991. Then he was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1995, 2001, 2007 and 2013. From 1998 to 2004, there was a Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Center.
