Rashid was a member of the Legislative Assembly from Langate constituency in the disintegrated Jammu and Kashmir state. Sheikh Abdul Rashid is the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party. Rashid won the Jammu and Kashmir seat in the 2008 and 2014 assembly elections. Earlier, he has also been an MLA from Langate Assembly twice. Earlier, Rashid also contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but lost.
According to the information, former MLA Rashid was arrested in 2019 and the NIA charged him under UAPA. He was the first mainstream politician to be booked under the anti-terrorism law. He has been lodged in Tihar Jail since August 9, 2019. Let us tell you that Rashid started his political journey by resigning from the post of construction engineer in 2008. That is why he is also called Engineer Rashid. Rashid was at number three as an independent candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In this election, Mohammad Akbar Lone of the National Conference defeated Raja Ejaz Ali. Akbar Lone got 1 lakh 33 thousand 426 votes, while Raja Ejaz Ali got 1 lakh three thousand 193 votes.
