External Affairs Minister Jaishankar to visit Qatar on Sunday

New Delhi. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will visit Qatar on Sunday and hold talks with Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman bin Jassim Al Thani. The talks will focus on measures to enhance bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, investment and energy. Jaishankar’s visit will come nearly four and a half months after Qatar released eight former Indian Navy personnel. These former Indian Navy personnel were sentenced to death after being arrested in August 2022.

“During the visit, he will meet Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani,” the Ministry of External Affairs said. It said the visit will “enable the two sides to review various aspects of bilateral relations, including political, trade, investment, energy, security, cultural and people-to-people ties, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.”

It is expected that Jaishankar and Al Thani will also discuss the overall situation in West Asia in the backdrop of Israel’s ongoing military attacks in Gaza. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Qatar from February 14-15 and held talks with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that India and Qatar have had historical and friendly relations.
