Islamabad: At least 15 people, including 10 members of a family, were killed in flash floods caused by heavy rains in northeastern Afghanistan, officials said on Sunday. Unusually heavy seasonal rains are wreaking havoc in many parts of the country, killing hundreds of people. Property and crops have also been destroyed due to flash floods caused by the heavy downpour. The floods on Saturday night hit Badakhshan and northern Baglan provinces in the northeast.

Life in Baglan province was badly affected due to heavy rains earlier this month. Mohammad Akram Akbari, director of the Natural Disaster Management Department in Badakhshan, said that a couple and their eight children died in the floods in the provincial capital Faizabad. Idayatullah Hamdard, provincial director of natural disaster management in Baglan province, said that at least 40 houses were damaged and several people were killed in Doshi district due to the floods. However, he did not give more details regarding the death toll. However, a local official said on condition of anonymity that rescue teams have so far found five bodies in the province.
