“The state government wants to make necessary changes in the existing laws to ensure the safety of doctors. Necessary amendments will be made in the Clinical Establishment Act,” Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told reporters after attending a workshop on safety of medical professionals organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the government will bring an ordinance by September 15 to amend the Clinical Establishment Act to make it more stringent to ensure the safety of medical professionals. “The state government wants to make necessary changes in the existing laws to ensure the safety of doctors. Necessary amendments will be made in the Clinical Establishment Act,” Sawant told reporters after attending a workshop on safety of medical professionals organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

Sawant said that an ordinance related to the Clinical Establishment Act will be issued before September 15 to provide necessary protection to medical professionals. The meeting, held in the backdrop of the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, was attended by state Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, Chief Secretary Punit Goyal, Director General of Police Alok Kumar and other top officials. The Chief Minister also assured to make necessary changes related to administration and infrastructure in hospitals.

He said the IMA will organise workshops and counselling sessions to sensitise women police sub-inspectors to deal with attacks on doctors and related crimes. State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said the government will expedite bringing in the necessary amendments in the Clinical Establishment Act. He said the safety of medical professionals is the top priority. Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) president Dr Ayush Sharma raised concerns over lack of security and safety at the state-run Goa Medical College and Hospital. “The doctors’ concerns have been conveyed to the state government, which has assured immediate relief to the resident doctors,” Sharma said.
