Bucharest: Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh made a positive start by defeating Romania’s Deak Bogdan-Daniel in the first round of the Superbet Classic chess tournament here. Gukesh, who is set to challenge defending world champion Ding Liren of China later this year, got a bit of luck during the match as the Romanian player failed to capitalise on his mistake. Gukesh then made a brilliant comeback to register a win.

Gukesh is participating in a classical chess tournament for the first time after winning the Candidates Tournament. Another Indian challenger in this tournament, R Praggnanandhaa, tried hard but had to settle for a draw in a tough match against Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan. Fabiano Caruana of America was also among the players who won in the opening round. He defeated Firouzja Alireza of France. The other two matches in the ten-player round-robin tournament ended in draws.

Bogdan-Daniel started playing the ‘Nimzo Indian Defense’ which made the match complicated in the middle. The Romanian player had a chance to take the lead over Gukesh but he lost his ‘rook’ against the pawn. Gukesh was able to make a strong comeback after this. He won without giving any chance to the opponent. Praggnanandhaa, playing with black pieces, faced a tough challenge from Abdusattorov. Both the players agreed on a draw after 60 moves.
