Harmanpreet Singh in contention for FIH Player of the Year award

Harmanpreet Singh, captain of the Indian hockey team that won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, was on Saturday nominated for the FIH Player of the Year award. 28-year-old drag flicker Harmanpreet scored ten goals in eight matches at the Paris Olympics. He has won the award twice in a row in 2020 and 2022.

In a release issued by Hockey India, he said, “It is a matter of pride to once again be included in the race for the FIH Player of the Year award.” He said, “I am happy that I have been nominated along with the best players in the world. But this was not possible without the support of my team. I was able to score so many goals in the FIH Pro League and Paris Olympics because the team created opportunities to score goals. “

Apart from Harmanpreet, Thierry Brinkman and Joep de Mol of Netherlands, Hannes Muller of Germany and Jacques Wallace of England are also in the race. For this, all the matches played in 2024 will be counted, which includes test matches, FIH Hockey Pro League, FIH Hockey Nations Cup, Olympic qualifiers and Olympics.

Harmanpreet said, “Paris Olympics is the biggest achievement of my career so far. The team always supported me, especially in last year’s World Cup when I could not score a single goal. But the team never blamed me. It was always in my mind that I have to live up to the team’s trust.” The Indian team also recently won the Asian Champions Trophy in China. Harmanpreet was the Player of the Tournament by scoring seven goals. Voting for the award will be held till October 11.
