West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee chaired an emergency meeting on Thursday to remove hawkers from footpaths across the state and illegal encroachment on government land. In the meeting, Chief Minister Banerjee issued a month’s notice to the hawkers to vacate the portions of the footpath and road they have encroached upon. She also formed a committee to conduct a survey on the issue of encroachment by hawkers and submit a report to her office within 15 days.

There will be no eviction for a month. During this period, hawkers will have to vacate the footpaths. She strongly criticized political leaders and police officials for their alleged involvement in encroachment of footpaths and roads. She said that action will be taken against the alleged officials if found guilty.

If the entire road is encroached, then our councillors are also responsible for it. They think they are getting monthly donations. This cannot be allowed. Why are they not satisfied with what they have? The greed of the police and politicians has increased. They give permission to the hawkers and then remove them with bulldozers. I adopt a policy of stopping it at the very beginning. Banerjee said that why should we blame the hawkers? It is our fault. Why are we not building a building in the New Market area? The hawkers will be shifted there.
