This coincides with the tenure of the former principal of the hospital, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh. Hearing the petition of former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital Akhtar Ali, the High Court directed the CBI to take over the investigation by 10 am on Saturday.
The Calcutta High Court on Friday transferred the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) probe into alleged financial irregularities at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The SIT was formed by the West Bengal government to probe alleged corruption at the hospital since January 2021, a period coinciding with the tenure of the hospital’s former principal Dr Sandip Ghose. Hearing a plea by Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, the high court directed the CBI to take over the probe by 10 am on Saturday.
Following the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at the hospital, Ali had moved the Calcutta High Court seeking an Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into corruption charges levelled against the hospital’s former principal Sandip Ghose, who was transferred twice due to corruption charges but was reinstated both times.
A single bench of Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj on Friday ordered the state administration to hand over all documents in the case to the CBI by Saturday. The CBI has been directed to submit a report about the investigation after three weeks and the high court will hear the case again on September 17. Ghosh, a professor of orthopaedics, took over as principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in mid-2021, after being promoted from his previous post at Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC).
