The court’s decision comes after the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Wednesday called for a “Maharashtra bandh” on August 24 to protest the alleged sexual assault on two young girls at a school in Badlapur in Thane district. Opposition parties, including the MVA, alleged that the girls’ parents were made to wait for 11 hours at the Badlapur police station before officials took note of their complaints.

The Bombay High Court on Friday restrained any political party or individual from calling for a Maharashtra bandh. This means that the MVA and other political parties cannot call for any shutdown in Maharashtra on Saturday. Hearing a few petitions regarding the Maharashtra bandh on Friday, a Bombay HC bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay said that the court will restrain political parties from going ahead with their ‘Maharashtra Bandh’.
