Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman said in a statement on Wednesday that the interim government led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus will be sworn in on Thursday. Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia called for building “a democratic Bangladesh where all religions are respected” in a statement soon after her release. Earlier, in an exclusive interview with Reuters, Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government, underlined the importance of capitalising on the current political transition. “Let us make the best use of our new victory, let us not let it slip away because of our mistakes,” Yunus said.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was on Tuesday appointed as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, according to a statement by the president’s press secretary. A major reshuffle in top posts in the Bangladesh Army took place after Hasina fled following deadly protests against her government over a controversial job quota system. India has recalled non-essential staff from its high commission and consulates amid the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh. The return of non-essential staff and families from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka has been done on a voluntary basis through commercial flight, sources said. All diplomats remain at the high commission itself. The high commission is functional, sources said.

At least 20 bodies of Awami League members, associates and their relatives were recovered from the country on Tuesday, the Dhaka Tribune reported. Meanwhile, New Delhi is planning to host the neighbouring country’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina arrived in India on Monday after fleeing Dhaka and is likely to stay here for some time as her plan to travel to Britain has hit a technical snag.
