He was welcomed by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leaders and workers amid loud slogans. As part of its probe into the case, the Enforcement Directorate had arrested over 25 people, including Soren, IAS officer and former Ranchi deputy commissioner Chhabi Ranjan, Bhanu Pratap Prasad and others.

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Friday walked out of Ranchi’s Birsa Munda jail after the Jharkhand High Court granted him bail in a money laundering case linked to a land scam. When Soren came out of the jail along with his wife Kalpana Soren, he was greeted by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leaders and workers amid loud slogans. As part of its probe into the case, the Enforcement Directorate had arrested over 25 people, including Soren, IAS officer and former Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Chhabi Ranjan, Bhanu Pratap Prasad and others.

At the time of his arrest, Soren had strongly denied the land grab charges against him and said the BJP-led central government had foisted the money laundering case against him as part of political vendetta. He was arrested from Ranchi Raj Bhawan on January 31, minutes after he resigned as Jharkhand chief minister. On June 22, the Enforcement Directorate seized Rs 1 crore in cash and 100 live bullets after conducting raids in Ranchi as part of a money laundering probe linked to alleged land grabbing against Soren and others.

Hours after Soren was granted bail, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Twitter said she was “very happy” with the development. “Hemant Soren, an important tribal leader and Jharkhand Chief Minister, had to resign because of a case but today he has got bail from the honourable High Court! I am very happy with this great development and I am sure he will start his public activities immediately,” Mamata Banerjee said.
