Srinagar. Hurriyat Conference chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday expressed hope that the government will reconsider its policy of releasing political prisoners by adopting a “humanitarian approach” and show some leniency. Farooq was allowed to offer Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid here after four weeks. Mirwaiz told reporters after the prayers that he hoped the “new government” at the Centre would understand the situation in the valley and take initiatives that would help establish lasting peace.

He said, “Hurriyat Conference has always been saying that only dialogue can bring a solution and we have suffered for this.” He alleged that many youth and political prisoners of Jammu and Kashmir are still in jail. He said, “The process of verification for jobs and passports has also become complicated and I think the government needs to show some leniency in these aspects. We hope that the government will change its policy and show some leniency and move forward with a humane and realistic approach.
