The Supreme Court on Thursday again appealed to the protesting doctors to return to work. On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, leading to a nationwide strike and protests by the medical fraternity. The Supreme Court was hearing a petition by AIIMS resident doctors Nagpur which mentioned that they are now being attacked due to their protest. They are not being allowed to appear for exams.
The CJI said that if they are on duty, they will not be considered absent and if they are not on duty, the law will be followed. First tell them to return to work… no one will take any adverse action against any doctor. After that if there is difficulty, come to us… but first let them come to work. Doctors of PGI Chandigarh also said that they are being harassed. They rally for an hour in the morning and then work. But they are also harassed… their casual leaves are being cut. The CJI said that once they return to duty, we will pressurize the officials not to take adverse action, otherwise how will the public health infrastructure run if doctors do not work.

Please reassure the doctors, we are worried about them, that they have to work for 36 hours… We all have family members, relatives who have gone to government hospitals. I have slept on the floor of a government hospital when someone in the family was sick. We have gone through this, we have seen doctors working for 36 hours.
