Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan may be tried in military courts in cases related to the violence that took place on May 9 last year. Since the incidents of May 9, there have been demands for action under the Military Act, as military installations were attacked and damaged.

Islamabad: Jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan may be tried in military courts in cases related to the May 9 violence last year, a government spokesman said. The Dawn newspaper quoted government legal affairs spokesperson Aqeel Malik as saying that since the incidents of May 9 last year, there has been a demand for action under the Military Act as military installations were attacked and damaged.

Violent protests had erupted following the arrest of Khan, the 71-year-old founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, from the Islamabad High Court complex in an alleged corruption case on May 9 last year. His party workers had allegedly vandalised a dozen military installations, including Jinnah House (Lahore Corps Commander House), Mianwali airbase and the ISI Bhawan in Faisalabad.

The mob also attacked the Army Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. “It is quite possible that Imran Khan’s trial will be held in a military court. The reason for this is that the military act will apply (on him),” Malik told a private news channel on Friday. Khan was arrested on August 5 last year after being convicted in the first case related to Toshakhana corruption filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Since then, he has been in jail in various cases.
