Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ram Nath Thakur said that India is committed to developing resilient agricultural systems and ensuring food security on the global platform. He made this remark while representing India at the G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting in Cuiaba, Brazil on September 12-14, 2024. India also emphasized on increasing the contribution of international trade to food security in the meeting. Our approach focuses not only on productivity but also ensures economic, social and environmental sustainability, increasing the prosperity of farmers, Thakur was quoted as saying in an official statement.
He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is giving priority to agricultural development and efforts are being made to increase the prosperity of farmers. He further informed that India is implementing the world’s largest food-based security programmes to ensure food security and nutrition. The meeting also discussed four key priority areas of global agriculture – 1) Sustainability of agriculture and food systems in their various dimensions, 2) Increasing the contribution of international trade to food security and nutrition, 3) Enhancing the role of small farmers in sustainable and inclusive agriculture and food systems and 4) Promoting fisheries in value chains.
