External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said India has never actively targeted the dollar and it has not been a part of its economic, political and strategic policy.
He also pointed out that due to some policies of America, India is facing difficulty in doing dollar based trade with some of its trading partners.
He said this in response to a question asked about dollar-free trade at ‘Carnage Endowment for International Peace’, a top American expert organization. He was asked, “One possibility of the world is to ask about dollar-less trade.” Many times India has expressed its intention about an alternative currency. “How do you see the role of the dollar and how do you see these consultations regarding your national policy?”
Jaishankar said, “I think you have confused us in some way, because we have never actively targeted the dollar.” It is not part of our economic policy or our political or strategic policy. There may be some others.
The Foreign Minister said, “I want to tell you that there are natural concerns. We often trade with partners who do not take dollars. Then we have to consider whether we should abandon the dollar exchange or find some other arrangement that works differently. So I can say that there is no ill intention towards the dollar. We are trying to do our trade.” He pointed out that India finds it difficult to trade in dollars with its trading partners due to some US policies.
