India should lead the revolution taking place in the field of artificial intelligence: Amitabh Kant, G-20 Sherpa

New Delhi. The country’s G-20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said that India should not only participate in the ongoing artificial intelligence (AI) revolution but also lead it and work hard on this technology to bring the country ahead on the global stage. He said at the Global-India AI Summit here, “We are indeed in a unique time with the ongoing AI revolution. Its ever-increasing capabilities in various fields, its growing acceptance among citizens and most importantly its ability to redefine the structure of industry and society mark it as a transformative era.

Kant, former CEO of Niti Aayog, quoted industry body NASSCOM as saying that 70 per cent of Indian startups are prioritising AI to accelerate their growth. This shows the important role of AI in the startup ecosystem. He said, “If we accept this revolution, the question before us is not only how we can participate, but also how we can lead the world. This is our opportunity and in fact our responsibility to use this important technology to bring Indian companies to the forefront on the global stage. ”

Kant said, “…Just like the first industrial revolution gave birth to various industries with the introduction of the steam engine, AI has the potential to revolutionise many sectors in India.” He said, “AI in sectors like healthcare, logistics, agriculture and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG)… is similar to building the infrastructure of the power industry.” Regarding the government’s purchase of 10,000 GPUs (graphics processing units) within the next one and a half to two years, Kant said that this is a strategic investment. This will significantly boost India’s processing capacity.
