Mumbai. The 2024-25 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) football tournament will begin on September 13 with a match between Shield winner Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Cup winner Mumbai City FC. The last season’s final was also played between Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC. The ISL on Sunday announced the schedule of the first 84 matches of the season which will run till the end of this year. The opening weekend will see two matches in a day for the first time in the season on September 14 when Chennaiyin FC will play Odisha FC at its ground while Bengaluru FC will face East Bengal FC.
The next day, Kerala Blasters FC will host Punjab FC at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. Hyderabad FC will play its first match against Bengaluru FC on its home ground on September 19. However, Hyderabad FC’s matches will depend on fulfilling the FIFF Club Licensing eligibility. 13 teams will participate in the upcoming season of ISL. This time I-League champion Mohammedan Sporting Club is also a part of the competition. This new team of ISL will start its campaign against Northeast United FC on September 16 at its home ground Kishore Bharati Krirangan.
With Mohammedan Sporting joining the tournament, three big Kolkata clubs will challenge for the title, including Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. The participation of three big Kolkata teams in the tournament means that there will be six Kolkata derbies in the season. The first Kolkata Birdie will be between Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting on October 5, while East Bengal and Mohun Bagan teams will clash on October 19. Mohun Bagan Super Giant won the prestigious ISL League Shield with 48 points in the 2023-24 season. Mumbai City, who finished second in the league stage, however, won the title after defeating Mohun Bagan in the final after the knockout round.
